Not the highly tannic and locked-up Barolo of yesteryear, yet nonetheless tight and unyielding when first poured. With air, the wine gives up concentrated aromas of leather, dried flowers and ripe, plummy fruit. Although there is a slight orange hue at the rim, an ultralong finish of abundant fruit and tannin indicates a promising wine. $36

Decidedly more fruit forward than previous vintages from this producer. Aromas of violets and plum jam. Quite tangy and medium bodied, the flavor profile of ripe berry fruit with underlying citrus notes leads to a peppery, yet smooth, finish. $40

2006 Dry Riesling
The 2006 dry Rieslings from designated top vineyard sites that follow were among those contributing editor Steve Pitcher rated highest out of more than 100 Rieslings he tasted open in Wiesbaden on August 28 at the VDP's annual "sneak preview." The wines were not released in Germany until after September 1, and many won't ship to the U.S. until next year. The average retail price for wines of this category will likely fall between $45 and $80. Production figures were not disclosed, but they are inevitably small. Grosses Gewächs is called "Erstes Gewächs" in the Rheingau. The first word following the producer is the village (e.g., Forst) and then the vineyard name (e.g., Ungeheuer).

Appealing, delicate scents of white peach, lemon zest and a distant rose garden waft from the glass. Round, firm and generously fruited with white peach, quince and shy spice buoyed by brisk, ripe acidity, finishing long with subtle minerality.

Exquisite Riesling essence aromas of dried apricot and a touch of honey, enhanced by a haunting minerality. Silky, seamless and complex, with cleansing acidity and persistent flavors that echo the nose, accented by high notes of quince and spicy Comice pear. The finish lingers more than a minute. This is a flawless and unforgettable noble dry Riesling from 61-year-old vines from a soil mixture of gray slate, volcanic elements and sandstone.

Wet pebble minerality and a touch of petrol define the nose. Quite rich and full bodied with loads of tropical fruit edged with citrus and buoyed by brisk acidity, the wine exhibits impressive balance and structure.

Lovely toasted honeycomb-dominated nose of white peach, and hints of clover and apricot skin. Rich, full bodied and unctuous, this extraordinary dry Riesling is bursting with ripe stone fruit flavors, with a palate that's almost enormous, yet superbly balanced with crisp, flinty acidity; long, citrus-tinged mineral finish.

Enticing aromas of jasmine and apricot skin. Round and plush on the palate with refreshing acidity and lusciously sweet lemon and juicy nectarine fruit, this is supremely delicious dry Riesling at its finest - at once fun to drink, yet still quite serious.

Enticing nose of stony minerality plus dried quince, pear and white peach. Bright, lively, complex flavors replicate the nose and are tinged with citrus. Excellent acid balance adds impact to the mouth-feel. A superb effort with a long, citrus-tinged mineral finish.

A whiff of sulphur blows away with airing to reveal toasty honeycomb, marzipan and apricot purée. Richly textured with a good backbone of acidity, the wine's white pepper-tinged flavors feature apricot, quince and juicy pear, finishing long with a flourish of slate minerality.

Pretty aromatics of white peach and jasmine, almost plumeria in its intensity. The palate is a superb balancing act of finesse and power, with loads of stone fruit and ample, ripe acidity, making for a distinctive and very appealing dry Rheingau Riesling.

Intriguing nose of ferrous minerality accented by crushed seashells, white peach and apricot skin. Big and powerful on the palate and loaded with copious, dense, ripe stone fruit tinged with citrus, all held together with scintillating acidity, this is serious Riesling built for the long term and mighty impressive at the outset.

A hint of honey, quince compote and Comice pear accented by crushed stone minerality and a touch of toasted almond define the nose. Rich, extracted, velvety and powerful in the mouth, offering a torrent of dried apricot and roasted pineapple, along with laser-like acidity, crashing into a perfect Riesling storm, that finishes nevertheless with elegance and finesse. Intriguing, enticing scents of marzipan, citrus and dried apricot enhanced by crushed seashell minerality. Luscious and powerful, yet thoroughly dry and elegant, with copious flavors of tropical fruit and white nectarine buoyed by a bedrock of driving acidity, this contemplative Riesling finishes with crushed seashell minerality dominating the long close. The first release of this special selection Syrah named for the vineyard surrounding the winery. This well-stuffed, exuberant wine exhibits very fragrant, appealing aromas of blackberry, black plum, chocolate, nutmeg and freshly cracked black pepper. Juicy and generous on the palate with near-liqueur-rich blackberry laced with black pepper, dark chocolate and brown spice. A complex, deeply fruited effort with a long, black pepper-accented finish. $30 / 700 cases
